Here is a follow-up to last week's post about
Mackenna's basketball team:
Mackenna's team played their last game of the
season on Wednesday against a team that was very aggressive and physical. They
played GREAT! They double-teamed the best player (named Princess) and shut down
their offense. The Lady Longhorns (Mackenna's team) won by more than 30
points!! It was their best game yet and so much fun to watch!
By winning their last game, they were seeded in the
weekend's play-off tournament. They entered the tournament, seeded 4th, which
happened to be the same seed as last year. (They lost in the first round last
year.) None of the other girls’ basketball teams from her school (one other 8th
grade and two 7th grade) made it to the tournament.
Mackenna's team was so excited to be going to the
tournament and they were scheduled to play at 4:30. This means they were getting out
of school early (the school dismisses at 4:00) to make the 45-minute drive. Just before
they left 7th period to get changed...the fire alarm goes off!
Everyone had to leave the building. When the "all clear" was given, the girls hustled back to their 7th period classes to get their belongings. Then, they ran down
to the locker room. Mackenna said they saw a coach in the hallway saying,
"Run, run, run!!" (Which is funny to me because we all know teachers have been telling
them to walk in the halls since kindergarten!)
When they got to the locker
room, their coach told them they had two minutes to change! They changed quickly and
ran out to the bus in their socks or bare feet...Mackenna said there was no
time to put on shoes! As they ran to get on the bus, a P.E. class was in
the middle of a soccer game...and the basketball girls had to run through the
middle of the game to get to the bus. While they ran through the game,
a ball came Mackenna's way and she scored a goal...and kept on running. I am
not making this up!! How hilarious is that?!?
The girls got to the tournament game on time and played the number one seeded team, who was undefeated. Mackenna's team
played so amazing, won the game, and handed the other team their season's
first loss. The other team was stunned and some of their girls were crying. We,
as parents, were going crazy. It was another amazing game! They advanced to the
next round, Saturday morning.
Unfortunately, they came up short in the scoring department in the second round and lost the Saturday morning game.
However, I think the team was still pretty happy with how their last scheduled
game ended and their Friday night tournament game. They were impressive!
