Basketball Update

Here is a follow-up to last week's post about Mackenna's basketball team:

Mackenna's team played their last game of the season on Wednesday against a team that was very aggressive and physical. They played GREAT! They double-teamed the best player (named Princess) and shut down their offense. The Lady Longhorns (Mackenna's team) won by more than 30 points!! It was their best game yet and so much fun to watch!

By winning their last game, they were seeded in the weekend's play-off tournament. They entered the tournament, seeded 4th, which happened to be the same seed as last year. (They lost in the first round last year.) None of the other girls’ basketball teams from her school (one other 8th grade and two 7th grade) made it to the tournament.

Mackenna's team was so excited to be going to the tournament and they were scheduled to play at 4:30. This means they were getting out of school early (the school dismisses at 4:00) to make the 45-minute drive. Just before they left 7th period to get changed...the fire alarm goes off! Everyone had to leave the building. When the "all clear" was given, the girls hustled back to their 7th period classes to get their belongings. Then, they ran down to the locker room. Mackenna said they saw a coach in the hallway saying, "Run, run, run!!" (Which is funny to me because we all know teachers have been telling them to walk in the halls since kindergarten!)

When they got to the locker room, their coach told them they had two minutes to change! They changed quickly and ran out to the bus in their socks or bare feet...Mackenna said there was no time to put on shoes! As they ran to get on the bus, a P.E. class was in the middle of a soccer game...and the basketball girls had to run through the middle of the game to get to the bus. While they ran through the game, a ball came Mackenna's way and she scored a goal...and kept on running. I am not making this up!! How hilarious is that?!?

The girls got to the tournament game on time and played the number one seeded team, who was undefeated. Mackenna's team played so amazing, won the game, and handed the other team their season's first loss. The other team was stunned and some of their girls were crying. We, as parents, were going crazy. It was another amazing game! They advanced to the next round, Saturday morning.

Unfortunately, they came up short in the scoring department in the second round and lost the Saturday morning game. However, I think the team was still pretty happy with how their last scheduled game ended and their Friday night tournament game. They were impressive!

8th grade Basketball

Mackenna has been playing basketball for her middle school again this year. There are two teams per grade level, an A team and a B team. She is playing on the A team.
They has one game left and if they win, then they will make it into the weekend tournament. Their record is currently 3 - 3.

They won big on Monday! They play again next week on Wednesday (Jan. 23), their last home game. The team they are going to play is the same team they ended their season with last year...the game where we left at half-time to take Mackenna to urgent care, thinking she had a broken arm. (It wasn't broken, but it was a sprained wrist and a deep bruise on her arm.) This team has a reputation for being tough. I think Matt wants to get her a mouth guard. A win on Wednesday (to put them in the tournament) is going to be tough. I just hope no one gets hurt.

One more note about this opposing team...their B team is academically ineligible and therefore must forfeit the last game. So, our B team girls don't get to play the last game at home. Just a little interesting drama to the end of the season!

DisneyWorld in December

Last month I was able to cross something off of my life's "to-do list" and see Disney in December. It was so amazing with all of the lights and decorations! Being a teacher, you never get to travel during the school year (unless you're being dishonest and not really home with the flu...you know I'm not a rule-breaker!) So, in the past, we have only seen it during the overcrowded Spring Break times! It was spectacular! We were able to ride some rides over and over again...yahoo!

We stayed at the beautiful Animal Kingdom Resort and when we arrived we were informed of our "upgrade"...I love my life! We had a sunset savannah view and giraffes and zebras roamed about, right outside of our room...too cool! The girls were thrilled with bunk beds, now they didn't have to share a bed. (No kicking each other during the night...it's the little things that make us happy!)

Disney at any time is fun, but we had a great time viewing the lights at Hollywood Studios and at Mickey's Christmas Party at the Magic Kingdom. Christmas lights, decorations and they even made it snow...it is the "happiest place on Earth!"

Before we left, we took pictures by the Christmas tree at the resort. It was so beautifully decorated. And yes, Mackenna is now taller than me! (sigh)

We used this photo for our Christmas card this year, too!
