We started off our Saturday with Alexa's basketball game at 9 a.m. She plays in league called "Upwards." It is a 3rd/4th grade girls' league. She is playing quite well and is leading her team in scoring!
A side note about basketball: Just last weekend, the league began to call fouls and having the girls shoot foul shots. While Matt was in Florida attending his grandma's funeral, I recorded both Alexa and Mackenna's basketball games. What makes this an interesting story is when Matt returned home and watched the games, he had to pause Alexa's game and rewind it. Alexa was at the foul line getting ready to shoot a foul shot and he had to see her pre-shot routine again. Matt had never discussed his own personal routine at the foul line with Alexa. When he watched it again, he was surprised to see his routine and Alexa's are exactly the same! That was a fun discovery! And...she sank every foul shot!!
After the basketball game ended, Alexa did a quick change in the restroom and we headed off to the softball fields. Her softball team was in a 4 game round-robin style tournament. She played the first three games and then Matt (the assistant coach) asked the head coach to have her sit out the last game. That girl was exhausted! She played third base for two games and catcher for one. After the game in which she played catcher, her head coach told her it was the best he'd ever seen this year. Nothing got by her! She was impressive!
While Alexa was busy with sports, Mackenna went to Galveston with our neighbors to experience the Mardi Gras parades. They have a parade at noon and a later one at six. She watched the parades, hung out on the beach, got a little windburn on her cheeks, and had a great time! I left the softball fields during the third game to drive down to Galveston and join Mackenna and see the later parade. Here is a picture of her on the beach with the Gulf in the background. The weather was so warm and the parades were fun! They floats were loud with tons of people on them throwing beads at you. You really have to pay attention when they go by or you'll get hit in the face with a strand of beads...ouch! I'm sure the parades and festivities in New Orleans are a lot wilder, but we had a great time! It was our first Mardi Gras experience of any kind. Here is a picture of Mackenna after the parade with all of her beads!
Sunday brought the Super Bowl and we hosted a fun party for our friends and neighbors. From basketball to softball to football...there were a lot of sports this past weekend and some Mardi Gras fun, too!
